This is a 25 page multisensory resource, based on the principles of Orton Gillingham, using multisensory strategies, If you are looking for support to develop comprehension of fictional, realistic fiction, and other story generated styled reading materials, consider this resource. There is more to understanding a story then the plot. Students struggle to identify thermal, auditory imagery! So, it is so important that in the earlier years, students internalize story elements. This resource is a success with students with dyslexia and other language based disorders. Why? The use of a multisensory approach, in conjunction with repetition of materials, and the color pages for each story element make the "kids" want to do the work! This resource is designed to support students in both content and style. Additional skills embedded in this multisensory packet include: Word,sentence and paragraph comprehension; Reading fluency; Internalize , not memorization of core story elements- Knowledge and understanding of the story elements develops reading to a higher level of cognitive thinking. Students develop skills to go beyond the literal aspects of reading, delving more into deeper thinking; Use of strategies such as using personal knowledge to make higher level connections of underlining techniques used by an author to convey conflicts, life lessons; Student opportunities are included so students have opportunities to be more independent, reducing need for teacher/parent intervention. This multisensory resource is part of a presentation for teachers and other adults looking to increase their knowledge to support students, young, teenagers and adults with reading and writing difficulties. There are many teachers and parents willing to work to support struggling readers but lacking the materials and "know how!" This is a packet that includes four mini lessons per grade level, beginning at kindergarten through sixth grade. Lessons include a focus on: vowel sounds; syllable type; syllabication; spelling rule/generalization; and prefixes, suffixes (grades 2 onward); reading fluency practice and writing. Each lesson includes the writing pages for student to write the dictated words you provide (included in each lesson) and for writing their own "personal sentences. If you are interested in the higher grades revisit this shop again mid-May for the higher grades. Please email me if you are interested in hosting a training at your school or organization. This multisensory noun bundle provides an organized and structured approach to introducing nouns to students. Teachers and parents have numerous options - selecting pages based on individual or for an entire class, including learning centers. To support teachers and parents working with students as they develop and internalize nouns, basic multisensory tools are included so students engage in a multisensory approach, using the visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile. The multisensory approach for this bundle is based on the Orton Gillingham structured literacy approach. Working with high school students has taught me student development needs to include concepts/ideas are abstract nouns. Students need to have automaticity of short vowel sounds, through multisensory activities. The ability to say short vowel sounds can be very difficult for struggling readers. It is important to carefully present each skill. It is important to present one vowel sound at a time, and to provide time in-between so student has a stronger opportunity to internalize the vowel. It is recommended to provide student with a visual chart of all short vowels in the classroom, and one the homework folder. This visual support will provide additional support while student internalizes each sound learned in class. Check out the vowel posters available in my shop. This is the resource for you! In a game form, with a spinner, students create multisyllablic words while having numerous resources to support their vocabulary development. This game helps students learn and internalize meanings of prefixes, suffixes, and roots - both Latin and Greek. Additional skills that a student will develop include: Working Memory Word Retrieval Processing speed Concept development of syllables, syllable meanings (prefixes, sufixes), roots Use of a multisensory approach - students have access to prefix, suffix, root meanings, AND words that are often included in science, history and English text books. Word comprehension Writing development This is a worthwhile multisensory purchase since it can be used over and over again, building a students reading and comprehension, which often increases reading fluency. Students love to make up the words and if available, the use of sand, clay (not included with this resource) can be used to create an even stronger connection to the brain pathways through visual, kinesthetic and auditory senses. Word Pattern V / CV This PDF formatted resource is based on the principles of Orton Gillingham and uses multisensory strategies to support student learning. The importance of a student to independently decode unknown words is critical to be a strong reader. The decoding tools included in this resource are designed to provide students decode unknown or unfamiliar words, basically to be independent and strong readers! This multisensory bundle is designed to support students improve their reading - all of the R-controlled vowels and compound words; along with writing skills development. Information is provided about concepts included in the bundle for the teachers, parents and other adults to have to help students. To provide a multisensory, explicit, and repetitive approach, there is a focus on the following skills: R Controlled Vowels ar, er, ir, or, ur For each r-controlled multisensory lesson, the teacher or adult needs to instruct the student (s) to identify the r-controlled vowel, sound, and provide a picture to highlight each sound. Compound Words Closed Hyphenated Open When two or more words joined together, the result is the creation of a compound word, with a new word meaning. There are three types of compound words: closed, hyphenated and open. Writing Skills Development “Writing Trigger Words” - support ideas/concept development It is critical to develop a student’s ability to decode, encode, reading fluently and comprehend, simultaneously focus on writing development, including sentence writing and paragraphs. Without this focus and balance, student often progress more in the area of reading, but struggle with writing skills, possibly due to limited writing opportunities. Do you work with older students who need to develop writing skills? This is a multisensory PDF resource that offers explicit instruction in the writing process, and provides numerous writing prompts: prompts with visuals; written prompts (no visuals) and journal topics that are engaging, and helps develop high cognitive skills along with writing skills. Older student appreciate the style of this multisensory resource; it does not insult students with babyish looking font, and visuals. The prompts are designed for older students. Please review the preview file as it highlights most of the resource. This resource provides students with specific writing strategies, text boxes that include a variety of word choices; and text boxes for students to fill-in as they progress through the pages. Answer keys are not included since each student will provide responses based on their personal knowledge bases. Please email me with any questions or comments. I have over 29 years of experience as a special education teacher, and have been formally trained, and continue to take coursework, focused on Orton Gillingham methodologies, strategies and techniques.
